What MOT Class Is My Vehicle? All You Need To Know

When it comes to keeping your vehicle roadworthy and legal in the UK, its annual MOT test is essential – especially if you’re carrying passengers. However, not all vehicles are tested under the same rules, so it can become quite confusing if you haven’t got the standard sized car. Here at FRM Automotive in Peterborough, we’re often asked ‘’what MOT class is my vehicle?’’ So, we’ve created a guide which breaks down the different MOT classes to help you understand which category your vehicle falls into.

What Is an MOT Class?

An MOT class simply categorises vehicles based on their weight, type, and purpose. Each class has its own set of testing requirements, ensuring that every vehicle on the road meets the correct safety and environmental standards.

Understanding your MOT class helps you make sure you’re booking the right test – and avoiding any costly mistakes or delays.

MOT Classes Explained

Here’s a quick breakdown of the most common MOT classes:

Class 1

  • Vehicles: Small motorcycles (up to 200cc).
  • Includes: Mopeds and scooters.
  • Notes: Larger motorcycles fall into a different class.

Class 2

  • Vehicles: Motorcycles over 200cc.
  • Includes: Motorbikes of all kinds, with or without sidecars.

Class 3

  • Vehicles: Three-wheeled vehicles up to 450kg unladen weight.
  • Includes: Some trikes and small three-wheeled cars.

Class 4

  • Vehicles: Most common MOT class.
  • Includes:
    • Cars with up to 8 passenger seats
    • Motor caravans
    • Quads (max unladen weight 400kg / 550kg if for goods)
    • Dual-purpose vehicles
    • Taxis
    • Private hire vehicles
    • Ambulances
    • Goods vehicles (up to 3,000kg gross weight)

Class 5

  • Vehicles: Larger passenger vehicles.
  • Includes:
    • Private passenger vehicles with 13 or more passenger seats
    • Play buses
    • Some minibuses (depending on size and weight)
  • Notes: Requires a different kind of test station with additional facilities.

Class 7

  • Vehicles: Goods vehicles between 3,000kg and 3,500kg gross weight.
  • Includes: Larger vans like Ford Transit, Mercedes Sprinter, and similar.

How Do I Know Which MOT Class Applies to Me?

Generally, if you drive a standard car or a small van, your vehicle falls under Class 4. If you’re unsure (especially if you drive a modified vehicle, a heavier van, or a minibus), you can check:

  • Your vehicle’s V5C registration document (log book)
  • The manufacturer’s handbook

Or simply contact us at FRM Automotive – we’re happy to help you confirm the right class.
