Here at FRM Automotive in Peterborough, we regularly get asked ‘’How often should I change my tyres?’’ The short answer is: you should replace your tyres every 20,000 to 30,000 miles, or roughly 5 to 6 years – whichever comes first. Although, there are of course external factors which need to be considered, such as tread depth, age, how and where you drive, and even weather conditions. Below, we’ve broken it down so you know exactly when it’s time to change your tyres.

Tyre Tread Depth – Know the Legal Limit

In the UK, the legal minimum tread depth is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre. But most experts – including us at FRM – recommend changing your tyres when the tread depth drops to around 3mm. That’s because stopping distances increase significantly below that point, especially in wet, rainy conditions.

You can check tread depth yourself using a 20p coin. Place the coin into the main grooves of the tyre – if you can see the outer rim of the coin, it’s time to think about replacements.

How Old Are Your Tyres?

Even if you don’t drive often, tyres naturally degrade over time. Rubber becomes hard and brittle, which can lead to cracks or even blowouts.

As a general rule, you should look to replace your tyres every 5 to 6 years, regardless of tread wear – and definitely by the 10-year mark. You’ll find the manufacturing date stamped on the sidewall of the tyre in the DOT code (look for a four-digit number – for example, ‘2319’ means the tyre was made in the 23rd week of 2019).

Driving Habits and Road Conditions

Your personal driving habits can have a big impact on how long your tyres last. If you often drive on rough roads, carry heavy loads, or brake and accelerate sharply, your tyres will wear more quickly.
